- Let's Pretend: How Pretence Scaffolds the Acquisition of Theory of Mind. A few weeks ago I went to a meeting of second grade parents at my son's school where I was surprised to find out that, around the age of 7, kids stop engaging in pretend play. The principal said this very matter of factly and with absolute certainty. Simply, yes, that's right at age 7 they stop pretending. A couple of us joked that it wasn't the case, that our kids are still you know "pretending." "Well," she assured us, "it's going to stop."
